The Castle of Count Dracula – Bran Castle

Mystery, myths, and just the pure horror it extracts from its visitors tell everything about it. The Bran Castle has always been the main attraction point of Romania’s tourism. It has been said that this is where the infamous Vlad the Impaler once resided. There, however, are no pieces of evidence to make this a factual claim.

Besides the legends and myths attached to its name, it is also a beautiful piece of medieval architecture. Bran Castle is located near Brasov, Romania and the first documented acknowledgment of its existence was on the 19th of November in the year 1377 when Louis I of Hungary mentioned it on an act he promulgated to the Saxons of Kronstadt.

Corvin Castle

Corvin Castle is also known as Hunyadi Castle or Hunedoara Castle and its construction started in the year 1446 with the order of John Hunyadi. It is now one of Romania’s famous castles. Just like the other castles of Romania, Corvin Castle is also mystified by legends associated with its past. One of the reasons why numbers of people visit this castle is because of its relation with Vlad The Impaler. It is said that this is where he was imprisoned by Hungary’s military leader, John Hunyadi.

Another story behind Corvin Castle’s fame is the death of three prisoners who met their doom in a well where they were left to die after digging for 15 years. This castle was featured in several TV shows for this reason.

Poenari Castle

Poenari Castle or Ruins has also been made famous by the legends surrounding its existence. It has also been related to Vlad the Impaler, Wallachia’s ruler in the mid-1400s.

Peles Castle

Constructed for King Carol I, Peles Castle was built between the year 1873 and 1914. It is one of Romania’s youngest castles. It Is located in the town of Sinaia which is located in today’s Bucegi Natural Park region.

This castle accommodated a number of celebrities’ visit including Jacques Thibaud who was a notable violin soloist, Sarah Bernhardt who was a famous French stage actress, Richard Nixon who was the 37th President of the United States, Gerald Ford who was the 38th President of the United States –just to name a few.

Banffy Castle

It served as a hospital in the year 1944 and became the target of German troops to get even with its owner of that time who was Miklos Banfyy for political reasons. It was destroyed and went under reconditioning in the year 1999 onwards.

This castle is located in Bontida, Cluj County which ranks third on net average earning in Romania. It is now used for the largest annual music festival in Romania called the Electric Castle which started in 2013.

Romania's tourism now continues to grow and has increased a whopping 10 percent from 2017-2018 in foreign tourist arrivals. It is undeniable that Romania is a country, rich in history and beauty both man-made and natural. What a wonderful treasure!
