DRACULA: ORIGIN - List of Real-Life Vampire Crimes

With their sharp fangs, alluring looks, and clever minds, vampires have become a staple character in modern fiction stories, starting with Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Stephanie Meyer’s sparkly Edward Cullen. Although almost everyone is certain that vampires do not exist and are merely just stuff of legend, this does not discount the fact that some criminals may have imitated their literal thirst for blood for their wrongdoings. After a series of background checks, here is a list of individuals that once existed who probably took inspiration from these blood-sucking monsters.

Elizabeth Bathory

Elizabeth Bathory was a Hungarian noblewoman who was notorious for her blood-curdling deeds in the late 1500s to the early 1600s. Her heinous acts were mostly aimed at her female servants, her kill count amounting to almost 700 during her entire lifetime. According to several historians, the royal lady might have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s famous bloodsucker, Dracula, due to the rumors saying that she regularly bathed in her victims’ blood, believing it to have some restorative powers.

Fritz Haarmann

Also known as the “Vampire of Hanover,” Fritz Haarmann was a serial killer of German origin who plagued the streets of Hanover from 1918 to 1924. Responsible for the deaths of 24 boys and young men (and possibly more), his trademark move was biting into his victims’ necks, particularly the Adam’s Apple, until they bled to death. Because of the increasing number of missing youths in his place along with his previous criminal records of sexually assaulting young males, he was eventually caught red-handed by the authorities and executed in 1925.

Richard Chase

Driven by an unnatural fascination towards human blood, Richard Chase, appropriately known as “The Vampire of Sacramento,” was another popular vampire-like serial killer who went into a months-long killing spree between the years 1977 and 1978. His bloody frenzy claimed the lives of six people, all of which were found drained of blood that Richard Chase claimed he had drunk himself. The peculiar thing about Chase was that he never chose his victims at random. According to him, he only went for those who left their doors open at night when they slept. When asked why, he answered that opened doors meant he was invited in, alluding to the popular belief that vampires cannot enter a home unless invited. Looks like this guy knows his vampire lore pretty well.

Allan Menzies

Unlike the previous three with multiple deaths under their belts, Allan Menzies was simply a case of fanboying gone horribly wrong. After developing an obsession towards the 2002 vampire-centric movie “Queen of the Damned,” watching it religiously at least three times a day, Menzies believed that Akasha, the main character of the said movie, wants him to kill someone so that he may fulfill his destiny and become a vampire like her. When one of his friends insulted him and his obsession with Akasha, Menzies became so enraged that he stabbed the man at least 42 times, finishing the deed with a hammer blow to the victim’s head, sucking his blood thereafter and gobbling up a small portion of his brain. Yikes!

They may be incapable of superhuman strength or reading someone’s minds, but the deeds of these real-life vampire criminals are enough to send chills down one’s spine, owing to the fact that these people once existed. Folktales and legends are fun and all, but it’s always better when stories have some truth in them, don’t you think?
